Category: Architectural & Design Elements

Architectural elements have been my main focus of production while attending the American College of the Building Arts. They range from large scale projects to very small interior elements and decor. While the designs are mainly derivative of 17th-18th Century designs, specifically English, each one uses a mix of both modern techniques of assembly as well as traditional techniques. Over my tenure at the College I have used a mix of contemporary forging methods, such as using jigs and power hammer tooling, as well as traditional forging methods, using open face dies as well as spring dies and swages, but have mainly relied on my freehand forging abilities.
The “Candle Stand” and “Section of Table Bracket” are examples of work that I have done with every piece of assembly and joinery was done traditionally with either mortise and tenon joints, rivets, half-laps, tapping and dieing, or forge welds. While the two matching side panels of the “Window Grilles” were completely fabricated, crolled using jigs and other modern equipment. But the majority of my work has been a mix of almost entirely traditional joinery with the addition of more contemporary assembly and production styles. Examples of this are “Sign Bracket”, “Firescreen”, and “18”x20” Panel”.
